Why Men of All Ages Need Physical Therapy

June 23, 2026

In honor of Men's Health Awareness Month, Specialized Orthopedic Physical Therapy shares how men of all ages can benefit from physical therapy. The following tips are provided by Ryan Collins, DPT from Specialized Orthopedic Physical Therapy, conveniently located at Wood River Health's Hope Valley facility.

There is a common myth that you only visit a physical therapist after a major surgery or a catastrophic sports injury. In reality, physical therapy (PT) is a proactive strategy for longevity, performance, and overall quality of life. From your twenties to your golden years, your body goes through distinct shifts in muscle mass, bone density, and hormonal balance. Utilizing PT at every stage of life helps optimize how you move, protect your joints, and keep you in the game.

The 20s & 30s: Building the Foundation and Peak Performance

In your 20s and early 30s, your body often feels invincible. Testosterone and physical recovery peaks early in this window, making it easy to ignore minor aches. However, this is exactly the time to establish proper movement mechanics to prevent a life of chronic pain later.

  • Injury Prevention: Correcting subtle muscle imbalances before they turn into chronic tendonitis or joint wear.
  • Athletic Optimization: Fine-tuning explosive movement, agility, and core stability for recreational sports.
  • Ergonomic Alignment: Countering the structural damage of sitting at a desk or commuting for long hours.
  • Core & Pelvic Strength: Learning how the deep pelvic floor coordinates with the lower back to maximize power and support vascular health.

Many of our older more experienced patients have said “youth is wasted on the young!”

The 40s & 50s: Maintaining Momentum and Managing Structural Shifts

By your 40s and 50s, the natural, gradual decline in muscle mass and bone density begins to accelerate. Many men find that their go-to workouts start causing nagging knee, shoulder, or back pain. This phase is about transitioning from brute-force training to highly efficient, sustainable fitness.

  • Pain Management: Pinpointing the root causes of nagging back or joint pain so you do not have to give up active hobbies.
  • Mobility Rescue: Restoring lost range of motion in tight hips and shoulders to reduce the risk of sudden tears.
  • Pelvic Health: Addressing specialized issues like early prostate health, urinary frequency, and sexual function.
  • Cardiovascular Support: Building safe, low-impact conditioning plans that support heart health and maintain circulation.

The 60s & Beyond: Safeguarding Independence and Longevity

In your 60s, 70s, and beyond, physical therapy shifts its focus toward preserving your freedom, balance, and quality of life. Aging well means maintaining the capability to lift your grandkids, play a round of golf, and walk confidently without fear of a fall.

  • Balance & Coordination: Training your vestibular and neurological systems to prevent dangerous slips or falls.
  • Arthritis Management: Keeping joints lubricated and supporting surrounding muscles to manage arthritis pain safely.
  • Post-Surgical Recovery: Rebuilding strength efficiently after joint replacements or prostate surgeries.
  • Functional Strength: Ensuring you maintain the essential motor skills needed for daily tasks and active living.

A Note on Men’s Pelvic Floor PT

It is an unfortunate misconception that pelvic floor therapy is strictly a women’s health issue. Men have a pelvic floor too, and dysfunction in these muscles is incredibly common. Men frequently tense these muscles unconsciously to "protect" other painful areas like the lower back or hips, which can backfire.

If you experience unresolved constipation, urinary urgency, erectile dysfunction, or deep groin pain, a specialized men's health physical therapist can be life-changing. Simple interventions like targeted manual therapy, biofeedback, and specialized deep breathing often bring noticeable relief in just a few visits.

Take Charge of Your Longevity

Do not wait until a severe injury sidelines you completely to take care of your body. Many insurances allow you to schedule an initial evaluation without a doctor's referral. Think of physical therapy as a tune-up for your body's engine—ensuring you stay strong, mobile, and active for the long haul.
