Wood River Health's WIC Program at Jonnycake Center

PEACE DALE, RI (MAY 25, 2022) – Wood River Health's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program will soon be offered at the Jonnycake Center for Hope in Peace Dale, RI.

Based at Wood River Health Service’s Hope Valley and Westerly locations, the WIC Program is free and open to income-eligible pregnant, breastfeeding and post-partum mothers and children up to the age of five. Participants will receive access to infant formula through an EBT card, one-on-one nutrition counseling services and referrals to services that address each child's unique needs. Children who stay on WIC until the age of five are better prepared and more likely to succeed in school.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to provide our programs and services to the members of Jonnycake’s community,” shared Alison Croke, President and CEO of WRHS. “It is an invaluable program that has an enduring impact on participants and their families.”

Individuals who enroll in the WIC program at the Jonnycake Center for Hope will receive a $25 gift card from Shaw’s supermarket; free diapers or pull-ups; wipes and socks; and underwear for toddlers and children. Following the appointment, mothers will be invited to become a Jonnycake Member and have immediate access to the Jonnycake Market.

“Connecting mothers and children with valuable resources is at the heart of our mission,” shared Kate Brewster, Jonnycake’s CEO. “By combining forces with WRHS’ WIC program, we are working in tandem to improve the quality of life of Rhode Islanders.”

WIC appointments generally take 15 to 20 minutes. Any person signing up for WIC must be present, including infants and children. Pregnant women should bring proof of pregnancy. During the appointment, the participant’s height, weight and hemoglobin will be recorded, and an income/nutrition screening will be performed.

The WRHS WIC team will be at the Jonnycake Center from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on June 23rd and 30th and July 7th and 14th. They will also be on site from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on August 4th and 25th. Walk-in appointments are welcome. For questions or to schedule an appointment, please call (401) 387-9611.
